Jason Brien, R. TCMP and Holistic Healer

There are those in the world whose calling chooses them, and I count myself among them. Since childhood I have had a very close fascination with the natural world, with life in all of its varied forms, as well as the hows and whys of people becoming unwell. I’ve been a keen observer of the interplay between the shadow and the light, of life and death, and the secret whispers in the woods that come not from language, but unspoken connections.

I found myself in situations where I was called to help others through intuitive ways that came long before I ever had any formal training. My family jokingly called me the “doctor” because whenever someone had a question about health or nutrition, they would turn to me, assuming that if I didn’t already have some insight that I would soon find out! Gifts of money from holidays or from doing chores were put towards books and herb collections. I was a pretty odd child, but in hindsight it all made perfect sense!

My life training has included brushes with serious health concerns that regular medical systems could not help me navigate my way through. The “wounded healer” archetype runs very strongly as a theme in my life. I believe that our wounds are one of the greatest sources of self-discovery. As Kahlil Gibran says, “It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self.” The illnesses and disease names we so strongly identify with in the modern world may have other unspoken meanings to guide us toward our ultimate liberation. The healer therefore aids healing by being evoked to his or her own self-healing, which means as I work with you I also work within myself.

More formally, I am educated in Traditional Chinese Medicine. My scholastic program was approximately 4 years long, followed by provincial registration in British Columbia. I am licensed to practice Acupuncture, Chinese Herbology, and have done extensive comparable study in the Western herbal tradition. Because I naturally gravitate toward health topics, the depth of my knowledge and intuition goes beyond formal schooling.  I’ve met many gifted healers in my life who weren’t certified in anything, but accomplished great feats, and so I am less concerned with professional title than I am with the actual process. I value and respect the education I’ve received, and I also value other ways of doing things. For this reason, my definition of “holistic” is constantly being challenged and expanded. This would be my path no matter what, working with the linear and non-linear at the same time.

I enjoy being an educator and teacher just as much as I enjoy running a clinical practice, and I built this site to reflect that. During times when I have been unwell and seeking guidance through the great world wide web, it was a gracious experience to find crucial pieces of wisdom shared by others. I want to add to that chorus, and pay it forward.  I hope you enjoy the contributions I have made, and will consider booking a private session with me if you’d like to have a more customized experience.

Blessings to you and all that you do!
